In spite of the fact that I’ve never been able to sit still… In spite of the fact that I’ve routinely been called “random” and family often accept the fact that my brain works like a pachinko machine… It never really occurred to me until a few years ago that there might be a reason for that. Even more so, even when I had my suspicions, it still never crossed my mind that those issues might be the reason I can’t seem to keep my head on straight enough to actually get things done.
Well, it occurred to me this month. I was really struggling with editing, and I switched my desk to standing mode. Suddenly, it was a lot easier to focus, to keep on task, to not feel the staggering urge to crawl out of my own skin when doing a “cerebral” task for more than about 20 minutes at a time (cough… writing and editing). Editing is often like pulling teeth for me, even though I actually often like editing. I’ve loved it in the past, in fact. But I’ve always had to be in the “mood” for writing and editing or else it was like pulling teeth. It’s the reason I often get so little done even when I dedicate a lot of hours to working on it. I procrastinate. I sit down intending to work for 2 hours and have to stop after less than an hour.
I’m hoping that with this epiphany, I can make some meaningful changes. I’ve been trying to be more mindful of challenges in all facets of my life. If something doesn’t work out, why not? What could I have done better? What did it feel like? Why didn’t I want to do better (because I feel like most things boil down to that)? Probably not a simple road, or a short one, but here goes…
